The Eating Culture

January 31, 2009

Just got back from Ipoh yesterday. CNY this year don’t feel as festive as previous years’ for some reasons. Many events took place since the last celebration and I somehow feel that we (by we, I mean the Chan’s of my generation) are growing up too quick. Speaking of which, it just seems to everyone that the most favorable topic to Grandma is for her grandchildren to grow up and get married. Thank goodness I’m only 18 this year and probably the second last she’d pester about marriage. Hahaha!

No doubt I put on weight because 1) Chinese is not called the eating culture for nothing, 2) Ipoh is a food city and 3) I have food lovers for family who knows how to cook!

Winnie and myself in midst of helping out with food preparation! :D

Tze Leng and Chun Wai.

Dad, myself and Sister squeezing into the frame. Haha, Dad’s head’s so huge! :P

Traditionally, Chinese New Year goes on for 15 days. Thus my angpow collection is still very much valid. Hehhehhh! ;) ;) Later tonight will be yet another family gathering dinner. (Read: Eat more! Get fat! Get out of shape!) Lol. Then another session on Monday midnight during bài tiān gōng. Er, I’m not exactly sure if I am even part Hokkien. Haha!

Hello From Ipoh!

January 25, 2009

After hours of Il Divo and Celine Dion during the slight jam last night, with drizzles hovering our sleepy heads, we got home safely. Just about a few hours ago, everyone who’s expected to be back to celebrate this Chinese New Year in my family has had our reunion dinner. :))) Photos will be another day’s story! Heh!

One thing that might tend to fall onto our blind spots during festive seasons is how some of those who travel on the highway alongside us, fail to reach their destination and derail into unfortunate events. Planting knives into the family’s heart that are awaiting their arrival, worse yet, to know the annual festival will be reminding them of a tragedy like a neon post-it note. Naive to hope that there will be none this year, but wishfully the least. Please drive back safely while singing to your favourite songs! Lalalalalaaa..

May everyone be able to spend the bits of this Chinese New Year with their family, bonding over cookies and tit-bits or whatever else you find on the table. Cheers!

Bagfetish

January 21, 2009

Aunt Sam recently got me a new bag. It’s a Che Che New York and is really, really cute! I think the hand carry’s size is simply convenient and I had been checking out more Che Che’s lately. Aaand I am inspired by Joyce Wong, thus,

White top, Club Monaco,
Navy blue playsuit, Italy,
Hand carry, Che Che New York,
Watch, Rolex.

This do was from the night out with the usuals last Friday night. :) I might’ve surprised them with my new haircut too, although you can’t see it from the photo above. Heh.

Decided to go book-shopping after class today and I did! Took the train to Mid Valley and had the best buy (for books), EVER. ;) Anyhoo, I obviously walked around too and eventually ended up in Che Che! Haha. I just found out that the one I am having is not available in Malaysia anymore. MWAHAHAHA!!! The whole line of bags and timepieces are just too cute! Sighhhhh. :) :) I think I’m having a bagfetish. :P

Roots

January 20, 2009

Big day for Americans, huh? “A New Birth of Freedom” is the royal theme for Barack Obama’s inauguration and I don’t have to hear it to know that his speech will be magical and moving. This is not only a historical moment for America to witness but the world all together. Obama has to carry the heavy responsibilities placed squarely onto his shoulders; the political affairs and financial mishap. Difficult, but the world has faith in Obama that he is the right person to can all the injustice and whip out changes.

Roots,
Alex Haley

Painting a picture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as slavery was chained to those with ‘darker skin’ in America. Contains probable shocking details of maltreatment back then. It is disturbing, even for a book, because it is factual. While reading, I was imagining all kinds of fictional acts because I honestly cannot give a thought of these happening in reality.

Heart-wrenching to read about these many thousands of innocent souls who sacrificed themselves, left their heartlands just to make US an illusion of wealth. I could’ve heard Alex Haley’s rough and rowdy voice narrating with his heart in line with history. Read this book(!) though it might be a wee bit difficult with the heavy slang. And it will take sooome loooooooong time because of its close to 1000 pages!!!

Describing this book as mind-expanding and moving would be an understatement, though I can’t find any better.

From the day Kunta Kinte was captured by slave traders in 1767 to the day of Martin Luther King Jr’s hauntingly powerful I Have A Dream speech (PLEASE WATCH IT!) in 1963 till Barack Obama’s inauguration today, it all proved one thing — we can change. Human race can evolve for the better and we just need the right people to lead us, the right situations to trigger us. Our world is possible for hope. :)

White Tees, Blue Jeans

January 18, 2009

It’s been a string of nights already that I slept with the lights on. I’m not scared of the dark, I’m just too darn exhausted. By the end of the nights, I just shut down when my spine touches comfort. I surprise myself how I managed to wake up the next mornings.

So tired that only when I was loading photos, I remember the night I was out with Vincent and Ivan! :P We had dinner at San Francisco Pizza. Vincent footed the bill because well, he’s earning now. And he is the perfect gentlemen, AHEM. Oh how can I say that after the mascara and make up huh! Shall I spill the beans? Hehehehhh. :P

We coincidentally wore matchingly from top to bottom! Lol. Ah, Babe, I’ve missed you! ;) At some point he just… disappeared from my posts because he’s currently in Genting, probably wearing his slightly oversized suit and working his no-good 11pm-to-7am shifts. Please don’t be sleep-deprived and try to get rid of your bloodshot eyes! :/ We’ll go eat Unadon when you get back in February okay? :)))

Aww, Ivan’s so cute. Double aww, Michelle’s cuter. HAHAHA!! Just joking! :P Ivan might not be coming back from Australia for a few years after he returns there sometime real soon. T_____T I will miss you too and the deals we have. Nyeh! ;) ;)

Anyway, I missed out on KLPac Open Day. Upside is that I did some cleaning for CNY which I won’t have time to do so next weekend. I am rushing here, so not much info about what happened to me during the weekend. Use your imagination. Lol. I have CSI episodes and ice-cream waiting for me downstairs. Au revoir. ;)
